5. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is one of the most polarising blockbusters of the last decade, and arrived after the hardcore crowd felt that The Force Awakens over-indulged in fan service, or perhaps even played it a bit too safe.

Nevertheless, The Force Awakens was broadly embraced by general audiences, grossing an insane $2.068 billion worldwide and landing an "A" CinemaScore alongside near-universal critical acclaim.

After the disastrous experiment that was the prequels, familiarity was seemingly the last thing this franchise had to worry about.

But then, enter Rian Johnson.

Johnson clearly wasn't interested in following J.J. Abrams' lead and delivering a solidly competent rendition of the hits, deciding instead to throw out most of the prominent fan theories and forge his own expectation-subverting path for the series.

When Snoke (Andy Serkis) is killed two-thirds of the way through the film and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) tells Rey (Daisy Ridley) she was born to some random junkers, it's as though Johnson is directly criticising the audience for their excessive emotional investment in their own head-canon fan theories.

"Snoke wasn't Darth Plagueis and Rey isn't Luke's (Mark Hamill) daughter - get over it!", is basically what Johnson is saying with this film, while proudly thumbing the nose at overzealous fans who can't entertain their precious theories being wrong.

Of course, the backlash against The Last Jedi was fierce enough that The Rise of Skywalker may well backpedal at least the truth about Rey's parentage, but while watching The Last Jedi, you can practically feel Johnson's distaste for unreasonable, over-invested fans dripping from every frame.
