10 Movies That Made You Say 'WTF Were They Thinking'

5. Somehow Palpatine Returned - Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

If we're being completely honest, chances are that audiences asked 'WTF were they thinking' to a lot of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. There were loads of head-scratchers throughout the course of the three movies, but the one that takes the cake is the return of Palpatine.

Forget that the Emperor is actually Rey's granddad even after it was 'confirmed' that her parents were nobodies in The Last Jedi, and forget the revelation that Snoke was merely a puppet for the evil tyrant of the original trilogy. The manner of his return was bizarre in itself.

When Ian McDiarmid's sinister drawl was heard at the end of the trailer for The Rise of Skywalker, it sent a shiver down the spines of the Star Wars fandom. There was excitement, but it was an excitement that was squashed within the opening minutes of the movie. This should have been a monumental Star Wars moment if done right, but it was instead part of the opening crawl, and no further explanation was offered as to how Palps survived Return of the Jedi.

Well, unless you count Poe Dameron's, "Somehow, Palpatine returned" later in the movie. This script was written by an Oscar-winner, folks.
