10 Movies That Ruin The Credibility Of The IMDb Top 250

4. Room (2015)

Room is half a good movie... that is, the first half. After that, things slow down, the plot goes out of the window, and we're left in the company of the film's sad lead protagonist, as played by Brie Larson (who rightly won an Oscar for her role).

Room reaffirms the IMDb Top 250 - and in turn, the users of the IMDb - as suckers for the mawkish and the saccharine. The intention of this article isn't to jeer at the collective IMDb user base, of course - if people voted for Room, then people voted for Room. You can't really argue with it.

That said, Room feels like proof that sometimes a concept - in this case, the "heartbreaking" story of a woman and her son confined to a single room - is enough to win over audiences in their droves. The idea of Room, and what it stands for, is apparently enough to ensue that users are awarding it 10 out of 10, no questions asked.

There is nothing miraculous about Room, though, even in its best moments. For the Top 250 to steer an unknowing film fan towards this picture - with the promise of greatness - feels inauthentic and unearned.
