Based on a classic Manga comic, Oldboy is a 2003 South Korean neo-noir thriller directed by Park Chan-wook and starring Choi Min-sik. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and has since been acclaimed for its gritty action sequences and themes set around revenge and vengence.

Oldboy follows the story of Oh Dae-su, a businessman who is kidnapped one night and held captive for fifteen years. He is released and begins a quest to hunt down the man responsible for his captivity, all while trying to work out exactly what the motivations behind him might be.

There are shocks and revelations hidden around every scene, and the film is stacked full of gruesome imagery that packs a real punch for those watching. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it sure is one of the most original films to have been released over the past twenty years.

With so many heavy things revealed, so many gory sights and plenty of violent action set pieces, it's easy to see Oldboy slotting alongside some of the other bloody horror flicks that were becoming popular in the early 2000s.
