7. Superman Returns To Forget III And IV
It becomes clear very early on in watching some films that it they are proper fan projects. Few are as overt, however, as Superman Returns. From the opening being note for note identical to Superman: The Movie, its made clear this was created by someone who had always loved the source. This should always have you worried; the best geek movies are those made by someone smart coming in from the outside who can strip away all the silly elements (look at Abrams with Star Trek or Nolan with Batman). Heck, even Bryan Singer, who was behind Superman Returns, proved the point with the X-Men franchise. Returns isn't the gross misstep fans claim it be, instead it just sets its sight on too small a demographic; it's tailored primarily to those who
love the Richard Donner films and few others. Case in point; the film is a sequel to only the Donner films, pretending that the light and maligned Superman III and The Quest For Peace never existed. This of course, begs many logical questions (whats up with Lex Luthor), but is really a smart move that many who criticise the film ignore. The joke was, ultimately, on Singer. Not only did the film fail to make serious money, leading to a serious, legend-eschewing reboot, X-Men was left to stutter through a string of disappointing, middle of the road fare.
