10 Movies Today's Teens 'Need' Less Than Love, Simon

2. The Mummy

Noticing a trend yet? How a lot of these films have attempted to make some sort of social commentary to speak to teens and have just wound up making it oh-so-much worse?

Well, The Mummy is arguably the worst of these offenders. Their go-to move to stay relevant was in changing the gender of the Mummy itself to female. Which would be great, except all of her powers and backstory are solely reliant on men. Whereas prior incarnations of the character did have tragic love-related backstories, the powers came from within themselves. Here, Ahmanet's powers come from a deal she makes with a male Egyptian God, who gives her all of her powers.

If that's not enough, Tom Cruise is a 'younger man' who is the sexual desire of every woman he meets. Jenny is the only other leading female character and from the moment she is introduced she is solely defined by her relationship to Cruise. She slept with him previously and he left her, so she spends the rest of the film alternating between being a damsel in distress incapable of even opening a door for herself and pining after him.

The film is so tone-deaf it can't even see the blatant issues with story choices like forcing Ahmanet to kiss her victims in order to take them over, or having Tom Cruise kill her by literally sucking the life out of her mouth. There's a definite sexual assault commentary running beneath this film but its not intentional.
