10 Movies Way Better Than They Had Any Right To Be
4. John Wick
Keanu Reeves may have starred in three of the greatest action movies ever made thanks to Point Break, Speed and The Matrix, but it would be fair to say that a great deal of his cinematic output in recent years has been average at best.
Never one to be pigeonholed in a single genre despite constant criticisms of his acting ability that have dogged him for decades, Reeves is a lot more versatile than he gets credit for, even if the quality of his projects is wildly inconsistent.
With the middle-aged action hero now in full vogue, Reeves returned to straight-up genre territory with John Wick and surprise, surprise... starred in another one of the greatest action movies ever made.
For all intents and purposes, John Wick is intentionally designed as an A to B action flick. Bad guys kill his dog, he kills bad guys. The end. But writer Derek Kolstad crafts an entire unique mythology for the assassin underworld just under the surface, while co-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch use their background as stunt coordinators to brilliant effect, crafting a visceral and kinetic series of escalating punch-ups and shoot-outs.
With over 25 years of martial arts training under his belt and decades of baggage as an action star, the character of John Wick suits Reeves like a glove, his steely determination making the most of the actor's 'blank slate' persona, in an impeccably-crafted actioner packed with bone-crunching set-pieces.
