10 Movies Where The Hero Originally Died At The End

1. Clarence - True Romance

True Romance was one of Tarantino’s earliest scripts and, according to the man himself, the most autobiographical; it's not hard to see shades of Tarantino in the character of Clarence. Maybe this is why he originally planned on making it his directorial debut, before selling the script to help finance Reservoir Dogs.

Despite the movie changing the non-linear structure of his script Tarantino was happy with Tony Scott’s take on it and he even approved of them changing the original unhappy ending. In the film, Clarence gets shot in the eye during the final gunfight, and after a tense few minutes with Alabama crying over him he finally wakes up and they escape.

In Tarantino’s ending - which was also shot - Clarence dies and Alabama escapes alone, apparently heading for a life of crime; she’s even namedropped by Mr White in Reservoir Dogs. Scott changed this because he fell in love with the characters while making it, and wanted to give them a happy ending.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
