10 Movies Where The Hero Originally Died At The End
2. Alex - Final Destination
Final Destination is a series with an awesome premise and, while the quality varies from film to film, it remains one of the most inventive franchises around. The first movie was born out of a rejected script for The X-Files and follows a group of teens who survive a plane accident thanks to a premonition, only for Death to come after them one at a time.
The film ends with the heroes realising they haven’t escaped their curse, but the story originally went in a more hopeful direction. In the first ending, the character of Clear gets trapped in a car by thrashing electrical cables, only for Alex to sacrifice himself by grabbing them and giving her time to escape.
The movie then cuts to Clear giving birth to Alex's child nine months later and, since she created new life, finally escaping death’s design. New Line felt this ending was flat (it is), so they changed it to the ironic and – more importantly – sequel baiting finale now seen in the movie.
Alex didn't get too far in this version either; Final Destination 2 reveals he was later killed by a falling brick.
