10 Movies Where The Villain Deserved To Win

5. Roy Batty - Blade Runner

Law Abiding Citizen
Universal Pictures

Rutger Hauer delivered one of the best performances in a sci fi movie ever as replicant Roy Batty, and that goes for hero or villain. Batty is definitely the antagonist to Harrison Ford’s heroic Deckard, but it’s certainly not as cut and dried as more schlocky sci fi movies are in good vs evil.

Batty is an existential character, a replicant who wants to experience his own humanity. He’s driven by fear, vengeance and other more animal emotions, yet is a thoughtful soul beneath his brutal exterior.

He almost does win too, at least to the extent anyone in his position might have won. Over simplifying the movie to Batty vs. Deckard, Batty could have simply let him fall to his death. Instead though, he saves Deckard’s life, demonstrating his own free will. In a way, this is a victory, demonstrating to Deckard that he is truly alive, and that the replicants deserve peace.

Still, if he had won in a more absolute sense, we’d have been denied one of the greatest death monologues in cinematic history with his ‘tears in the rain’ send off.
