As history has shown us, it's not completely out of the ordinary for a low-budget horror movie to scare the crap out of millions of folks all over the world and become a box office smash in the process. Yet, that's usually because the small project in question is something fresh, compelling or genuinely terrifying, making it a can't miss event for fright fans and casual audiences alike.

The Devil Inside was sadly none of these things which is what makes its staggering earnings at the box office so baffling.

Piggy-backing on the success of much better found footage hits like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, The Devil Inside told the story of a woman on a quest to figure out what happened to her mother, who was possessed by a demon and wound up murdering three people. Ultimately, the film was slammed, with Rotten Tomatoes' Critics Consensus branding it a "cheap, unscary mess". Yet, this critical panning still didn't stop the movie earning a whopping $101.8 million at the box office.

Not bad going for a film that only cost $1 million to put together and has been wiped from most people's memories in the near decade since its release.
