10 Movies You Won't Believe Were Rated PG
5. The Mask
The Mask started off as a comic book centred around Stanley Ipkiss, a neurotic man who transforms into a reality-bending trickster when he wears a magical mask. The series was a huge hit with readers due to its outlandish art, dark humour, and graphic violence.
But in the comic, The Mask isn't a whimsical prankster. He's a psychotic killing machine. When Hollywood prepared to adapt the story, they knew the vulgarity would have to be toned down exponentially. Despite its vast departure from the source material, The Mask was a huge hit, launched Cameron Diaz's career, and helped cement Jim Carrey an A-list star.
Like most comedies of the decade, The Mask had some crude humour but it usually got away with it due to the film's goofy tone. But there is one moment that is so obscene, it stands out like a sore thumb. While The Mask is making balloon animals for a gang of criminals, he accidentally pulls out a used condom. The moment is so quick, most children won't even notice it. However, it's so unnecessary and such a cheap joke, it's crazy that it wasn't removed.
This, combined with the violence and the genuine menace in the latter half of the movie, and you can tell it came from R-rated origins.
