10 Movies You Won't Believe Were Rated PG
3. The Witches
Roald Dahl stood out as a children's author since his novels didn't rely on being cutesy and sentimental. Instead his stories focused on the ghastly and the macabre. Of course, when his work is adapted for film, some of scarier elements have to be toned down. After all, you can't make a children's movie too frightening, right?
However, the adaptation of The Witches is far more terrifying than Dahl's original novel. The film depicts people being incinerated, witches being turned into anthropomorphic rodents, and mice getting crushed and splattered across the floor.
The most scarring moment has to be the reveal of main villain, The Grand High Witch. As the witches gather in an assembly, their leader peels off her face, unveiling her true form; a withered, malformed Skeksis-like crone.
Even though we know the actress, Angelica Huston, is simply in heavy makeup, you can't help feeling unsettled looking at her dangling ears, beak-like snout, or hairy chin. Because of Huston's unnerving performance and Jim Henson's award-winning make-up, The Grand High Witch is often hailed as the scariest witch in cinematic history... and it was in a children's movie!
