Ancient prophecies. Secret agents. Evil space apes. Godzilla with the power of magnetism?! These are just some of the insane things you can expect from the original Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Yes, one of Godzillas greatest adventures pits him against one of his most popular foes. While Godzilla has fought his titanium doppelganger in multiple incarnations in multiple films, it is the original from 1974 that still remains the best. This is one of the most entertaining Godzilla films. Fast paced and colourful; it revels in its B-movie goodness. The film has the feel of a cheap 70s era Bond film; that is, if Bond squared off with alien apes that want to take over the world with a giant robot Godzilla, of course. And there are more monsters in this than just Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. Godzillas pal Anguirus shows up to get pummelled by a disguised Mechagodzilla in one of the most brutal scenes in any film in the series. Then there is King Caesar, a mythical lion-god who shows up at the end to aid Godzilla in a 2 vs. 1 battle to the death. Complementing all this craziness is the score by Masaru Sato, which is full of life and energy. The costume designs are really great, especially Mechagodzilla, which still remains the best design all these decades later. When he unleashes his full power, it is a fireworks display of awesome, made all the more impressive knowing it's all done practically. The monster fights are bloody and brutal while the human side manages to be just as entertaining, making for one of the best entries in the series.
