Nathaniel Essex was created by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum, and first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #221 as the leader of the Morlocks. We eventually discover that Essex is in fact a geneticist who is over a century old, and through manipulation of his own genetics, along with a helping hand from Apocalypse, he was transformed into the villainous Mr. Sinister. Sinister has played a large role in a number of mutant characters development, Cyclops and Gambit in particular. While Sinister isn't technically a mutant, his origins are inherently linked to Apocalypse, who encountered Essex in the 19th century. It is with Apocalypse's alien technology and knowledge that Essex was able to transform into Sinister, so he has always had a connection to Apocalypse, despite often working against each other. in the Age of Apocalypse, Sinister was one of his Four Horseman and a key leader in his army. The AoA's Sinister's teachings are actually responsible for the mutant groups known as the Morlocks and the Genoshan Mutates in the mainstream universe, which were experiments by the AoA exiles Dark Beast and the Sugarman. With Apocalypse obviously dominating the villain category, there is still potential for Sinister to make his own mark on the film. While Apocalypse does indeed have his Four Horseman to help with his goals, he also has a wide network of allies and followers that includes Sinister, which would only add to the enormity of the film. It would also allow Sinister to be built up for a leading villain role of his own in future movies, along with his mutant killers known as the Marauders. Of course, there is another character on this list that would benefit from Sinister's involvement, but we'll get to that in a bit.
