10 Overlooked & Underappreciated 90s Action Movie Flicks

7. China O’Brien (1990)

Tough And Deadly Roddy Piper
Golden Harvest

This is high-kicking martial arts sensation Cynthia Rothrock in her most famous role (outside of Hong Kong at least). Rothrock, alongside genre mainstays Richard Norton and Keith Cooke, delivers a classic action romp that just seemed to disappear with the decline of home video.

After giving a self-defence demonstration to a gang of thugs in an alleyway, big city cop China fatally shoots a young man. Unable to live with the consequences of her actions, she quits her job and moves back to her small hometown. Upon arrival she finds that a lot has changed since she left, with organised crime and corruption running through almost every aspect of the town. After her father - one of the last honest cops left in town - is killed, O’Brien swears revenge and campaigns to become the sheriff.

Atrocious acting does nothing to hinder this fun film. In fact, the bad acting enhances it with a little (unintentional) comedic charm.

At this point in her career, Rothrock was already a star in Hong Kong, working with the famous studio Golden Harvest, who also produced this movie. Golden Harvest gave Bruce Lee his big break in The Big Boss and cast him in Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon.
