10 Overlooked & Underappreciated 90s Action Movie Flicks
6. Death Ring (1992)
Hunting humans for sport is a simple but engaging premise for an action film. Sometimes manhunt flicks are done well, such as Avenging Force and Hard Target, some less well, like Deadly Prey. Death Ring has a unique cast, starring Norris (Mike, not Chuck), McQueen (Chad not Steve) and Swayze (Don, not Patrick).
Former soldier Matt Collins (Mike Norris) wins an ironman-toughest guy in the world-super-survivalist-contest and catches the eye of the evil Danton Vachs (Billy Drago). Vachs wants Collins to be part of his annual manhunt, as prey for a gang of sadistic killers. In the woods he finds a previous participant (Don Swayze) still surviving. Together with the help of Matt’s pilot friend, they take the fight to the bad guys. The tables are turned as the prey become the hunters.
Straight-to-video and getting undeserved harsh reviews, this action delight has spent decades being overlooked. A possible reason for the negativity may be the shady way in which the movie promoted itself, listing only the actor’s famous sounding surnames. Despite this cynicism, Death Ring remains a testosterone-fuelled bit of macho escapism.
