10 Overlooked & Underappreciated 90s Action Movie Flicks

5. RoboCop 3 (1993)

Tough And Deadly Roddy Piper
Orion

Poorly received upon release and subject to derision in hindsight, a person could be forgiven for questioning RoboCop 3 being placed on a list such as this. The third installment deserves a second chance. Less grit and gore and more goofiness, this one is a lot of fun.

RoboCop/ Alex Murphy - now played by Robert Burke rather than Peter Weller - has his prime directives overwritten by underground rebels. He joins their resistance against OCP and their plans to bulldoze local neighbourhoods after a firefight with OCP forces leaves Murphy's friend and partner Officer Anne Lewis dead. This movie truly has it all, destructive car chases, over-the-top shoot-outs, things blowing up, robot ninjas, double crosses, not-so-subtle social commentary. Let us not forget the excellent dialogue, such as when an OCP officer asks a colleague for a light, enter Robo with “Allow me, scum”. Murphy then proceeding to destroy their office with a flamethrower. Gold.

Orion studios had visions of profitable toy lines and larger box office numbers as RoboCop became a household name. Due to this change in target audience, part 3 does lack the ultra-violence and edge of the previous movies. However, this is still a thoroughly entertaining popcorn flick. Decades later, it deserves a second chance without the expectations of it living up to the first two.
