Similar to The Blair Witch Project, Trollhunter is presented as an authentic documentary, which enhances the realism and danger whenever one of the trolls is hinted at.

When the students helming the doc befriend self-proclaimed trollhunter, Hans, they can't tell if he's legit or crazy, as Hans directs the filmmakers to a specific spot where he hopes to flush out a troll. 

Rather than just showing the mythical beast immediately, it's cleverly teased in a number of ways. As the tops of the trees open up, the students catch their first glimpse of a troll. As it widens the trees apart, it appears to be not one troll but three. And when the troll walks forward, it's apparent the giant cryptid is a single being with three heads.

However, it's still too dark to make out, urging the filmmakers to use night vision. Although the troll can be seen up close, the cameraman moves frantically, making the triple-headed beast look blurry.

As the troll charges forward, Hans shines a UV ray on it, allowing viewers to see it properly for the first time, though it's only visible for a few seconds as the light causes the towering troll to turn to stone. That said, enough has been witnessed to leave viewers utterly captivated. As such, seeing the troll here doesn't dilute its mystique but amplifies it.
