When trailers broke featuring Ashton Kutcher as Apple tycoon Steve Jobs, one could have been forgiven for a swell of optimism. Kutcher certainly looks the part, and actually does a passable job - pardon the pun - mimicking several of the late technology mogul's mannerisms.

Sadly, Jobs' fatal flaw was the woefully inaccurate depictions of the personalities depicted within the film, with Kutcher's shallow take on Jobs taking centre stage. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak brutally denounced the movie's initial script as "crap", having read about "as much as he could stomach".

Wozniak's later allegation that Kutcher never reached out to consult him during production sums up the inept state of affairs. The notion of attempting to play one of the most influential figures of the 21st century while failing to consult the individuals who were closest to him paints a picture of an actor unconcerned with honoring Jobs' legacy.

Michael Fassbender's mesmerizing turn as Jobs in 2015's separate biopic laid bare the failings at the heart of Kutcher's limp depiction in greater clarity. Not only did Fassbender receive an Oscar nomination for the manner in which he utterly threw himself into his performance, he played to the subtleties and nuances of the enigmatic man in a manner far beyond the dramatic capabilities of the ham-fisted Kutcher.
