10 Philip Seymour Hoffman Performances That Prove His Acting Genius
9. Andy - Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
Easily one of the most under-appreciated films in Hoffman's filmography, Sidney Lumet's searing crime drama about two very twisted brothers and a robbery gone wrong benefits from outstanding performances at every turn (namely Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Albert Finney), and Hoffman is no exception. Watching the role right now is a little difficult (given that his character, Andy, is a drug addict), but there's a brilliant intensity to his work here, particularly as things get truly desperate in the movie's later portions. If Ethan Hawke's Hank is the sympathetic brother, Hoffman's Andy is meanwhile a total douche, and he makes us feel this unquestionably. We have no sympathy for him when the chips are down, and there's no doubt a little satisfaction on our part when Albert Finney (who plays his father) reaches for that pillow... Quote: "The thing about real estate accounting is that you can, you can, add down the page or across the page and everything works out. Everyday, everything adds up. The, the total is always the sum of its parts. It's, uh, clean. It's clear. Neat, absolute. But my life, it, uh, it doesn't add up. It, uh... Nothing connects to anything else. It's, uh... I'm not, I'm not the sum of my parts. All my parts don't add up to one... to one me, I guess."
