2. The Schism
A year before the Great Mouse Invasion, Marvel finally let the remnants of mutantkind come to blows over their divided ideology and methods.
Ever since the big event M-Day, where mutants became an endangered species, Cyclops had become more militant and aggressive in his defense of his people, acting against the fundamental idea of "mutants and humans living together in peace" because there were no longer enough mutants to count as a minority.
Without going into the full story, it boiled down to Cyclops and the militant mutants wanting to form their own country to be left alone versus Wolverine, who stood for Charles Xavier's dream of coexistence.
It is one of the few 'modern' X-Men comics to become a classic in the same vain as the Claremont era, and a perfect moment to create a film to show who the X-Men are, and what, if any one thing, they should stand for.
