10 Potentially Great Movies Ruined By One Character

7. Ruby Rhod - The Fifth Element

It was pretty obvious from relatively early on in Luc Besson's The Fifth Element that we were in for a campy, kitsch science fiction romp. From the colourful sets and costumes to the hilarious performance from Gary Oldman as the villain Zorg (a wonderful contrast to his corrupt police officer turn in Leon, also directed by Besson), it was clear that this wasn't a film intended to be taken seriously. Even so, there's a limit to kitsch excess for anyone, and the line was crossed when Ruby Rhod appeared on the screen. It might be a little unkind to discuss actors in terms of who's the most annoying, but Chris Tucker is a name that would no doubt crop up - his performance here is the exemplary moment of a career defined by that unwanted characteristic. From "thoroughly enjoying" to "bloody annoying" in a few short yet excruciating moments - The Fifth Element shows how one character can stick in the mind for all the wrong reasons.
