10 Problems Terminator Genisys Sequel Must Address
8. Ease Up On The Heavy-Handed References...
The opening half an hour of Terminator Genisys, in which Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) travels back to 1984 to rescue Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) strikes a good balance between knowing references to the original movie and subverting the events to create something original.
Unfortunately these nods and winks become a little too repetitious as the film progresses, and by the time it ends it leaves the impression that, rather than watching a new movie, what's transpired feels like a "best of" highlight reel. It's a problem which similarly blighted Jurassic World, although with Terminator Genisys it's been taken to the nth degree.
Easter eggs and references are an increasingly common feature of blockbuster movies, and while there's nothing wrong with them per se, when they're overdone it's hard not to be left with the feeling that they're shoehorned in for lack of original ideas. Given that Genisys mined these references for everything it could get, hopefully a sequel will be freed up to concentrate on fresh material.
