Will the Spider-Verse be part of the MCU? A yes or no answer breeds unique problems. Spider-Man is one of the most lucrative properties on the planet. We've already seen Marvel and Sony refuse to work together, work together in fantastic cooperation, and threaten to stop working together before agreeing on another contract.
Fans should, unfortunately, expect this will-they/won't-they relationship to continue to have its ups and downs for the foreseeable future.
As Sony and Disney navigate their relationship — and depending on how willing each company is to share profits — we should expect discussions and contracts to continue impacting these films for years to come. This creates an interesting problem, specifically for the MCU.
Kevin Feige may be toying around with a Spider-Man-centric idea for a movie seven years down the road. At the same time, Sony may also be thinking three films ahead, drafting outlines for where the Spider-Verse will go.
Will Sony's plans disrupt any MCU plans? If so, will this hurt or help their relationship? As the Spider-Verse kicks off, Sony should try to provide fans with a roadmap that respects their relationship with the MCU without tipping their hand too much.
