Fox’s X-Verse has taken the Victor Creed character and blended him with a minor character from Wolverine’s supporting cast, Dog Logan, to give us a Sabretooth who is also Logan’s half-brother. However, in the comics their connection is more complicated.
Sabretooth represents the monster who’s given up trying to pretend to be human, a leering sadist who likes the taste of blood and kills randomly for sport. He’s everything Wolverine despises in himself, the Hyde to his Jekyll - but it works both ways. The reason Creed hates Logan so much is that Logan succeeds where he has failed. For the most part, he’s caged the beast.
On occasion, Creed himself has managed to tamp down the murderous rage that possesses him, even becoming a reluctant member of the X-Men - and in current X-continuity, Sabretooth is a hero, the ongoing victim of sorcery that ‘inverted’ his persona, a man determined to follow in the footsteps of his deceased nemesis and redeem himself for his past atrocities.
Liev Schreiber’s performance as Victor Creed was one of the only good things about the first Wolverine movie. Played correctly, Schreiber’s Sabretooth is a left field but perfect choice to succeed Logan. Of course, that assumes that Logan is gone for good...
