10 Really Annoying Moments In Captain America: The Winter Soldier

5. Are We Meant To Be Surprised?

When the subtitle of the Captain America sequel was announced, media outlets the world over were quick to point out it meant Bucky Barnes would be returning. And the Wikipedia page for The Winter Soldier actually links to a sub-section of the Bucky page. Yet the film gave the impression it was trying to shock audiences with the reveal of the villain€™s identity. Maybe Marvel were hoping for a Game Of Thrones effect, where those unfamiliar with the source could get to experience a genuine twist, while those in the know got giddy at the thought of seeing what they€™ve loved in print brought to life. Frankly, that's a pretty flawed approach; anyone hooked on Marvel just thanks to the movies will have checked out one of the above sources and knows it, so the shock is lost on many. As with Fury€™s death, some dramatic irony would have made these reveals feel less like the film was misunderstanding what its audience knew. Imagine an alternate opening, with us picking up just after Bucky€™s fall in the first film. We see Zola morph him into the Winter Soldier (simultaneously reminding us who Toby Jones is in time for the big reveal), making the character€™s appearance loaded with suspense for when Roger€™s finally learns the truth. Surely that would have been better?
