10 Reasons Captain America: Civil War Beat Batman v Superman

5. The Catalyst For The Final Battle Makes Sense

The big Batman/Superman battle in BvS hinges almost entirely on coincidence and Luthor's really nutty and nonsensical plan. He's spent eighteen months turning Batman against Superman by mailing him newspaper clippings? He allowed Batman to steal his kryptonite because he was certain Batman would use it against Superman?

And he somehow magically knew the exact moment Batman would be ready to fight Superman, which is when he chose to kidnap Lois and push her off to summon Superman?

What if Batman wasn't falling for it? What if he was actually intelligent and stole the kryptonite to keep it from Luthor? What if Superman wasn't flying in Metropolis at that exact moment? What if Batman decided to investigate Wonder Woman further instead of putting on his anti-Superman armor?

And once they're fighting, Superman knows it's all because of Luthor. But even though he has several chances, he never says, "no wait, stop, we're being played." Instead, we have to rely on the contrived "Martha!" to stop the fight.

In contrast, Civil War prevents the final conflict in a way that makes sense. Iron Man, unlike Batman, figures out what's going on and he's willing to put politics aside. But it's when he discovers that Bucky killed his parents that sends him over the edge. And going after Bucky is what pits Cap against Iron Man.

It's a catalyst that works in the context of the story.
