3. Doctor Who Has Better Writing
Following on from the discussion about ideas, let's think about the quality of writing in the two franchises. A good slice of thought-provoking adventure needs to be well written as well as chock full of good ideas. In other words, ideas can only take a story so far before some technical proficiency on the writing side is required. The Star Wars dialogue is well known for being cringe worthy. Other than a couple of running gags, there are remarkably few lines that are quoted on a regular basis. On the other side of the dialogue divide, Doctor Who's most pedestrian episodes are littered with quotable gems. Consider the following from episode 1 of The Invasion (not the most obvious of episodes to quote from), wherein Patrick Troughton's Doctor is attempting to ascertain where the TARDIS has landed by looking at the scanner screen.
Ah, yes, I'm fairly certain that's England in Summer. Look at the rain clouds.
It's hardly surprising that Doctor Who dialogue is frequently quoted for its eloquence and humour. For every "These aren't the droids you're looking for", a Whovian could fire off ten instantly funny quotes from any era of Doctor Who.
