Comedy typically sets a much lower bar for visual style and directorial skill, and it's fair to say that Paul Feig's first two movies with Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids and The Heat, had incredibly forgettable aesthetics.

The $65 million Spy came along last year and proved that Feig could craft a genuinely entertaining action flick, but of course, a $144 million sci-fi movie is a wholly different, more challenging beast.

Surprisingly, Feig has actually trotted out a largely visually sharp film that, while occasionally suffering through a mixed bag of CGI (especially in its third act) is full of solid cinematography and sharp editing for the most part.
