10 Reasons Ghostbusters Isn't As Bad As You Think
4. Leslie Jones Is Actually Fine
Easily one of the most vocal complaints about the movie's trailers so far has been the seemingly stereotypical nature of Leslie Jones' character Patty Tolan. The trailers literally picked Jones' two worst gags from the entire film for their marketing: the Exorcist-inspired slap-a-thon and her cringe-worthy stage dive at a heavy metal concert.
While Patty does shout on occasion, and many have deemed this to be an unflattering racial stereotype, her race actually isn't a big part of the movie at all, much like how Ernie Hudson's Winston wasn't defined by his blackness in the original movies.
Jones thankfully reigns in her boisterousness for most of the movie, and though she's easily the weakest of the four lead actresses, she isn't nearly as grating in the final movie as she seems to be in the trailers. You can likely put this down to Paramount cynically trying to appeal to the "urban" market by playing-up her "blackness" in the marketing.
