10 Reasons Horror Sequels Haven't Happened Yet
2. The Previous Film's Box Office Performance - Goosebumps 3
Even though it's aimed at younger audiences, there are few horror IP more immediately recognisable worldwide than Goosebumps, and in 2015 Sony launched a blockbuster movie franchise based on R.L. Stine's beloved novels.
The original Jack Black-starring romp was solidly successful at the box office, grossing almost $160 million worldwide, leading to the release of sequel Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween in 2018.
And while you might assume that a brand as widely beloved as Goosebumps could easily be spun off into an ongoing hit franchise, Goosebumps 3 still hasn't come to fruition as of 2025.
This is because Goosebumps 2 wildly underperformed at the box office, grossing just $93.3 million, which even accepting the sequel's smaller budget compared to its predecessor marks a colossal drop in revenue.
Though Goosebumps 3 has never been officially cancelled, it's clearly been put on ice following the second film's lackluster performance.
Since then, the IP has pivoted back to the world of TV with an ongoing series for Disney+.
Cinematically speaking, it's far more likely that the franchise gets rebooted at some point rather than Sony ever picking up from where the second movie left off, considering the middling-at-best interest in this interation.
