10 Reasons Suicide Squad Sucked More Than Batman V Superman
4. It's Tonally Uneven
Tone has been something of a problem in the DCEU since its inception, though Suicide Squad is the most egregious example so far.
It basically wants to be a fun, witty, irreverent movie like Guardians of the Galaxy, and to an extent succeeds when it comes to character banter and basically rejecting the overt seriousness of Man of Steel and BvS.
However, it ill-advisedly introduces serious elements that fall woefully flat, namely Deadshot's (Will Smith) desire to prove to his daughter that he's "not a piece of s***", and Rick Flagg's (Joel Kinnaman) relationship with June Moone aka Enchantress, which isn't nearly as emotive or engaging as David Ayer clearly things it is.
When the movie's satisfied to be a rambunctious, off-the-wall action flick with kick-a** characters, it works to a point, but as soon as it tries to make us empathise with them, it's a total bust. At least BvS largely sticks to the seriousness and commits to a consistent tone.
