10 Reasons Why Dark Phoenix Is One Of The Greatest WORST Comic Book Movies Ever

7. Mystique's Death Scene

Dark Phoenix
Fox

Mystique dies for no reason while all the rest of the X-Men hysterically sit around and just kind of watch it happen.

Jean returns to her childhood home, unearths the fact that her father is still alive, and the X-Men all arrive to try and bring her home, only for things to take a turn for the worse when the police arrive. Mystique tries to calm her down, resulting in Jean accidentally killing her.

This is laughable in so many ways that it is kind of hard to keep track, so bear with. The film has done nothing to try and endear Jean and Mystique's relationship to us, literally giving them one exchange before they went to space, meaning that it comes as a complete WTF moment when Professor X tells everyone else to stand down, and that Mystique is clearly the one to handle this.

Then Jean 'accidentally' kills her through one of the Phoenix's power surges, which sends Raven flying back and impaling her on some wood. This makes Jean passive in her own narrative and dilutes her character arcs, all in the name of having her turn good in the finale. And then there's just the simple fact that a whole bunch of all-powerful mutants who could have done literally anything to save Mystique all just sit around and watch her die.

Great stuff.
