Action movies and particularly superhero movies tend to follow a mind numbingly formulaic plot structure. It€™s a combination of the ticking time bomb and the captive innocents. No other franchise has done this as frustratingly as the X-Men films. X-Men has a big machine that Magneto powers with an innocent girl to change everyone in New York. He€™s stopped just in time. Rogue is saved. X2 has a big machine that Stryker and then Magneto use to kill every member of an innocent species on the planet. They are stopped just in time. The world is saved. The Last Stand has a cure made from an innocent child that will be mass produced and weaponized. Production is stopped just in time. The boy is saved. Origins has innocent mutants kidnapped and experimented on. They are saved. First Class is based on a real life situation where there are missiles aimed at innocent Americans. The missiles are diverted just in time. America is saved. The Wolverine has his lover kidnapped by the Yakuza. She is saved. It€™s well past time for something involved and different.
