1. Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (2023)
Despite hitting screen two years ago, and having all the makings of not just a vampire genre classic, but quirky indie classic, Ariane Louis-Seize's Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person has yet to find the audience it deserves. And, it should almost go without saying, this is because it’s in French.
A coming-of-age story for goths, emos, scene kids, punks and new romantics, Humanist Vampire dives into the quirky Quebecois life of 68-year-old “teen” vampire Sasha (Sara Montpetit), who is failing to take human life and become a fully fledged adult in her community. Thus, she’s sent to live with her rough-n-tough cousin Denise (Noémie O'Farrell) to see what life is like out in the big, bad world and hopefully overcome her morality issues.
Sasha doesn’t exactly take to this new life with sharpened fangs, but when she meets suicidal schoolboy Paul (Felix-Antoine Benard), she feels like she may have found the answer to her problems - until the two start falling in friendship (and possibly more).
It’s got blood, it’s got kills, and it’s got a Nick & Norah vibe that makes it stand out as something truly unique, even from assumed companion pieces like Twilight or Buffy. Louis-Seize packs the film with a soft and uber-cool aesthetic, balancing heavy themes like anorexia and suicide with comedy, horror and a truly idiosyncratic brand of romance. If you can get past the half-inch of subtitles, it’s worth every second of your concentration.
