9. Mika - Under Paris

Alien: Romulus Kay
Netflix

Netflix's hit shark movie Under Paris has a surprisingly mean streak, as it proved beyond any doubt when suddenly dispatching its thinly-veiled Greta Thunberg stand-in - environmentalist activist Mika (Léa Léviant).

Mika leads a group of activists who want to help free the gigantic mako shark Lilith, ultimately heading into the catacombs to track her down. But Mika's overconfident belief that she can peacefully interface with the killer shark ends up being her undoing, as after petting one of Lilith's children, Lilith attacks Mika, taking a massive bite out of her while leaping into the air.

Even accepting that Mika's methods were arguably highly misguided, it was surprising to see the film linger so long on the demise of a young person who was by no means evil - just stupid.

Director Xavier Gens straight-up savours Mika's pain and suffering in her final moments, though for many who found Mika an infuriating character who only made the scenario worse, her demise proved to be extremely satisfying. Shocking all the same, though.
