8. The Demon - Strange Darling

Alien: Romulus Kay

JT Mollner's Strange Darling is nothing if not an exercise in gleefully subverting our expectations. After all, the marketing led us all to believe that our unnamed protagonist (Willa Fitzgerald) is an innocent woman on the run from a murderous lunatic (Kyle Gallner), who is even named "The Demon" for good measure.

Except, the film's big conceit is that the woman is actually a serial killer known as The Electric Lady, who kills people she sees not as human but demons, and this so-called Demon was simply her latest target.

Cinematic convention dictates, then, that the man - in reality a cop who simply chose to hook up with the wrong woman - will eventually get revenge on the Lady for tormenting him, and even if he dies, it'll happen right at the end.

Except, the "Demon" is killed more than 20 minutes before the end of the movie, when during a struggle with the Lady, she bites out his jugular and leaves him to bleed to death. The rest of the film focuses instead on the Lady's attempts to deal with the police who arrive on the scene, and less surprisingly, things only get bloodier from there.
