4. Your Monster

Your Monster is, for about 95% of its runtime, a wonderfully charming horror comedy that seems to stumble when it comes to wrapping the whole shebang up.

Melissa Barrera stars as Laura, a depressed young actress who, after being dumped, discovers a monster (Tommy Dewey) living in her childhood home, resulting in a most unconventional love story.

Inevitably Laura and the monster have a third act breakup, before Laura returns to the stage to give the performance of her life.

During a break at the show, however, Laura's ex Jacob (Edmund Donovan) - who also happens to have written the play - confronts her about their breakup, at which point the monster returns and rips Jacob's throat open, killing him.

The curtain then reveals a bloodstained Laura to the audience, with Jacob's corpse behind her and the monster nowhere to be seen, the film's final moments implying that the monster was never real but merely symbolic of Laura's rage.

There were absolutely those who loved this grim final twist on the Beauty and the Beast formula, even though many lamented the bleakness of an ending where, apparently, Laura is now going to prison for murder.
