The ending to Alex Garland's folk horror film Men is one of the year's most divisive, and without question the single most shocking and unexpected horror movie moment of 2022 so far.

The film follows Harper (Jessie Buckley), a recently bereaved woman who travels to a remote countryside manor for a holiday, only to find herself antagonised by a group of men who all resemble the same person (Rory Kinnear).

In the insane climax, a naked man she's been stalked by throughout the film returns, now bearing a resemblance to the folkloric figure the Green Man, representative of rebirth.

Fittingly, the man's stomach than suddenly swells and he violently gives birth to a young boy who Harper encountered earlier - again, a boy with Kinnear's face.

The boy then gives birth himself to a vicar Harper met, before the vicar births Harper's landlord Geoffrey, and finally, Geoffrey births her dead husband James (Paapa Essiedu).

While there are many readings audiences could take away from this jaw-dropping ending, the four-part birthing circle is surely supposed to be representative of the cyclical nature of abuse, and how misogyny is passed down to men across generations.

For many it's the scene that caused the movie to jump the shark, while for others it cemented Men as a daring, bonafide horror masterpiece.
