2. Halloween Ends (2022)

Coming one year after Halloween Kills, David Gordon Green’s Halloween Ends was set to be the final confrontation between Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode and slasher icon Michael Myers. This was supposed to be more than the last chapter in the trilogy; it was the culmination of a legendary horror saga.

In an unexpected move, however, Ends shifted its focus away from Laurie and Michael to instead shine the spotlight on a new killer: an ostracised man named Corey (Rohan Campbell) and his budding romance with Laurie’s granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak). The aim was to use this plot thread to continue the series' exploration of trauma, turning its attention to how it can be passed down through generations.

While the attempt was to give some substance to the slasher flick, the problem was the script couldn’t balance between Corey and Laurie’s plots to the point where Laurie and Michael were treated more as an afterthought in what was supposed to be their climactic showdown.

Not only did Ends fail to deliver on its promise, but Michael’s screentime was also lacking, with the kills likewise toned down in their violence. In short, this finale was a resounding disappointment all round.
