10 Recent Horror Movies That Had No Right To Be This Good

What is the worst horror subgenre? Arguably, it's the shark movie. Alongside giving sharks a bad name that they don't deserve, almost every film in this subgenre is bottom-of-the-barrel dreck. Very, very few shark movies are actually good, which is why Something in the Water, a 2024 British indie horror, was such a pleasant shock.

This is an uber-rarity. Not only is Something in the Water a shark picture that works, but it's a shark picture where the sharks aren't really the most interesting part. Instead, the group of characters stuck at sea is the real star. All are well-played by a cast of unknowns, and thanks to the movie's surprisingly sturdy screenplay, they are a genuinely well-developed grouping with distinct personalities and fleshed-out relationships.

Even though the sharks aren't as present as you might expect, all of their attacks are still really frightening because this is happening to characters you actually care about for a change. It might've got mixed reviews at the time, but Something in the Water deserves another look, and to be frank, there are hundreds of worse shark movies you could be watching.
