10 Recent Horror Movies That Surprised EVERYONE

6. Sinners

Dangerous Animals
Warner Bros.

Ryan Coogler's Sinners is a film that confounded expectations in all the right ways.

Though it absolutely delivers on the promises of its period vampire movie setup, this is ultimately a far more subdued aspect of the story until much later on.

Coogler spends more than half its runtime focusing on establishing the setting, characters, and overall tone, and it isn't until the third act that the blood-sucking shenanigans really take center stage.

Furthermore, the marketing neglected to mention that Sinners is basically a musical in disguise.

Music is emphasised just as much, if not more, than the vampire element, and several mesmerising sequences are flat-out focused on musical performance above all else.

Who among us went to Sinners expecting to see a prolonged Irish jig or a surreal montage sequence spanning centuries of humanity's musical history?

And this is without even getting into Sinners' final surprise - shoving a lengthy, vital epilogue into the middle of its credits, as many moviegoers only learned about once they got home.
