10 Recent Horror Movies That Surprised EVERYONE

4. The Coffee Table

Dangerous Animals
La Charito Films

Spanish horror-comedy The Coffee Table has become something of a viral, word-of-mouth hit since it debuted on streaming services, with horror fans generally urging others to just watch it without reading much at all.

But if you do read the movie's synopsis or even watch its trailer, you'll understandably assume that it's about a troubled couple who buy a coffee table that appears to be cursed, and will seemingly cause all hell to break loose in a similar vein to something like The Monkey.

But this isn't that movie. Like, not at all.

Without giving the big twist away, something absolutely horrifying and not remotely supernatural involving the coffee table occurs early in the story, which creates a gut-wrenchingly suspenseful situation for the film's remainder.

Basically, the filmmakers managed to trojan-horse an almost unimaginably awful scenario inside of a seemingly more conventional horror film, and whether you ultimately dig it or not, it's tough not to respect the boldness of the vision.
