3. Fantasy Island

Don't Breathe 2
Sony Pictures Releasing

The Fantasy Island was originally a goofy show about a magical resort where the visitors' deepest desires were manifested into reality. The caveat was that these wishes rarely turned out the way anyone expected, leading to all sorts of hi-jinx. It wasn't great but it was just about good enough to run for over 150 episodes.

Despite its origins as a light-hearted drama, Blumhouse decided to reboot Fantasy Island as a supernatural horror. In theory reimagining the iconic series like this is a great idea. It was a creative spin on a recognised property, was backed by an excellent studio, and had an solid cast, including Michael Peña, Maggie Q, and Michael Rooker.

Sadly, the Fantasy Island reboot failed miserably. The script is so bare bones, it barely feels like a first draft. There's a myriad of cringey jokes in every scene that already feel dated, even though the movie only came out two years ago.

Michael Peña may be a terrifically diverse actor but he's awkwardly miscast as the resort overseer, Roarke. He tries so hard to come across as mysterious and whimsical, it's almost parodical. Although some horror sequences could've been scary, the scene always cut away just as they're about to get interesting thanks to the movie's infernal PG-13 rating.
