10 Recent Horror Movies That Were WAY Better Than Expected

Though Christopher Landon's new horror-adjacent thriller Drop boasted an enticingly high-wire, tech-infused premise - of a woman (Meghann Fahy) receiving threatening drop messages on her phone during a date - the marketing didn't leave a great impression.

For starters, the trailer seemed to show most of the movie, and the constant refrain of a buzzing phone sound throughout ensured that many audiences complained online about said trailer being "annoying." Yet if you can put the mediocre marketing aside, Drop is actually another tight, to-the-point genre offering from Landon.

No, it's not doing anything hugely unique, but as a modern reworking of classic Hitchcock combined with '90s tech thrillers, it is a fun, self-consciously silly time while you're watching it.

Most of the credit goes to Landon for his slick work behind the camera and a strong lead performance from Meghann Fahy, enough to paper over some of the narrative's less-persuasive seams. Still, given that the trailer made audiences groan en masse - and likely contributed to Drop doing not great at the box office - it's surprising just how solidly entertaining the end result actually is.
