Spooky season has finally arrived. It's time to decorate the lawn with candles, dress up as your favourite villains, and walk through the most terrifying haunted houses. But why leave the comfort of your own home just for a good scare? Stay home and watch a scary movie instead. There's nothing more synonymous with Halloween.

Maybe you're interested in watching some classics like John Carpenter's Halloween, The Exorcist, A Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or Scream. These may be the kind of movies that got you into horror in the first place. If you haven't seen them, you've probably heard a lot about them.

But, to build the kind of notoriety these films have can take years, even decades, and many just as exceptional movies have been forgotten or overlooked in the past few years because they have neither the time nor budget to reach such a number of people.

So, if you're looking for something a little more recent than the classics, and a bit more intimate than big-budget blockbuster fare, then you're in luck. Turn off the lights, click on the television, and check out these some indie horror movies. Even while you're closing your eyes and hiding under your blanket, they're sure to get under your skin.

10. The Void (2016)

Black Coats Daughter
D Films

With Lovecraftian horror back on the rise with the popularity of HBO's Lovecraft Country, The Void brings a much different but still fully immersive and terrifying experience.

The film follows police officer Daniel Carter, who - after bringing in a man crawling on the road - finds himself trapped in an abandoned hospital as a mob of cloaked individuals stand silently, surrounding him and the other people inside. As they try to figure out what's happening, the situation only becomes more confusing, vaulting them into a story filled with violence, monsters, and dark dimensions.

The Void boasts some impressive practical effects, especially on its creatures and an escalating sense of uneasiness. Questions rise in conjunction with the runtime, many of which stay unanswered throughout the film, so if you're looking for something darkly otherworldly, terrifyingly spiralling, and downright unforgettable, then The Void is the perfect choice for this October.
