When his family clashes over the holidays, young Max is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus. All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own.

What this horror does well is clarity. The scenes are crisp, the dialogue is clear and we are immediately comfortable with the characters themselves, in stark contrast to the soulless characters spawned by Godzilla: King of Monsters who seem to constantly be fighting in scenes that are dark, murky and honestly hard to make out.

Krampus has a very traditional set-up, one that plays out in a surprisingly wholesome and child-friendly way - it’s an old-school ‘’Gateway’’ horror. This gives the movie a playful sense of innocence, because it doesn’t have to worry about supplying gory kills or being too intense. Instead, it can focus on delivering a timeless message about embracing your family over the holidays.

There is also more to Krampus than just a bunch of titans beating the business out of each other - there is actual character development. The story line truly draws you in, and you'll find yourself holding your breath in hope that your favorite character will make it through the night.

At least with this horror movie, you get to see the monster coming and the confrontations are shot with a competent lighting crew. Godzilla: King of Monsters tried desperately to build suspense, but somehow this child-friendly yuletide horror has managed to scrape together more excitement than even the giant reptile could provide.
