10 Recent Movie Choices That Pissed Off The Fans
1. Joker: Folie A Deux - Again, Basically All Of It
Well, this was... unexpected.
Joker (2019) was a box-office titan, beloved by many and nominated for several Oscars. The sequel has proven to be the inverse of that: a passionately loathed, Razzie-nominated box office flop. Why?
Because Joker: Folie a Deux is subversive in the wrong way, it subverts the rules of good filmmaking and writing. It's a stupendously dull courtroom drama - broken up by musical numbers so bad they make Emilia Perez look like West Side Story - that does nothing but go over the events of the first film and fails to progress the story like a good sequel should. By the end of the picture, it feels like nothing has actually happened.
Flie a Deux goes down an unexpected narrative route without the good writing or commitment to its characters that would allow things like Arthur (Joaquin Phoenix) dramatically renouncing his Joker persona in court to feel earned, and it also seems to hate its audience.
Director Todd Phillips seemed to believe that most who loved the first film idolized the character, and so spends the follow-up brutalizing Arthur and attacking the concept of fandom through the character of Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), here a toxic fangirl. It'd be fair to say most liked Joker because it was a thought-provoking crime thriller and few rational viewers would've seen Arthur as a hero, but this seems to have been lost on Phillips.
In short, if there's one film that angered the fans lately, it's Joker 2... and that's completely justified.
