4. Andy - Bring Her Back
Bring Her Back is one of the most uncompromisingly bleak horror films in recent memory, and in turn features one of the most upsetting death scenes the genre has served up in quite some time.
The film revolves around two siblings, Andy (Billy Barratt) and his partially sighted step-sister Piper (Sora Wong), whose foster mother Laura (Sally Hawkins) intends to use the pair in an occult ritual to resurrect her dead daughter.
Things don't go according to plan, of course, and when Andy summons social worker Wendy (Sally-Anne Upton) to the house, Laura runs them both over with her car.
Wendy is killed instantly, but a gravely wounded Andy is still alive - for now.
In an excruciatingly drawn-out scene, Laura shoves Andy's face into a puddle and holds it there until he dies.
Watching him helplessly struggle in a single unbroken take before finally perishing is deeply uncomfortable and, considering everything he's been through, overpoweringly sad.
And to make matters worse, Laura doesn't even get a satisfyingly brutal death in recompense by film's end.
